Building on over 25 years’ experience as an advocate in the areas of partnership, property, and commercial law, I was a Scottish Law Commissioner from 2020 to 2025 leading projects on commercial leases.
Since 2009 having arbitrated many contractual disputes and from 2010 to 2020 decided numerous cases coming before the Housing and Property Chamber tribunal. I am a co-author of the leading book on Scottish arbitration.

As Scottish Law Commissioner I led projects on the termination of commercial leases (leading to the Leases (Automatic Continuation etc) (Scotland) Bill) and on the Tenancy of Shops (Scotland) Act.

I have acted in complex disputes involving commercial leases, farming and professional partnerships, access to property and boundaries.

Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators since 2007, I was involved in the drafting of the Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010. I was a first-tier tribunal judge in the Housing and Property Chamber for 10 years.

I have considerable and varied experience in commercial disputes ranging from supply of goods and services to loans, guarantees and securities and the effect of insolvency. Interpretation of contracts, legislation and other documents is a particular speciality.

My interpretation of a trust deed for creditors (insolvency scheme) was upheld by the UK Supreme Court in Dooneen v. Mond (2018) UKSC 54.
